Macrobiotics

Essays on macrobiotics - the whole food plant-based way of health and happiness

"If you eat in accordance with nature you will inevitably be healthy and happy. Nature gives us many things to choose from which are good for us. The art of making such a choice is called macrobiotics."

(definition by founding father George Ohsawa)

Hello, my name is Dean Cooling. I'm launching this website on 1st August, 2020, my sixty second birthday. I have been involved in personal health and well-being for nearly forty years now. Wakido is a term I created that represents the compilation of wisdom I've had the good fortune to have studied, and put into practice, during that time.  The word is made up of three parts: wa - means peace, or harmony; ki - means energy; do - means way or path. The way to harmonise, or make peaceful, our energy, is what I'm trying to convey with this word. Establishing health, peace, and happiness, is the purpose of the word and the teachings it represents. It's based on traditional wisdom and is sourced from a number of teachers I've known personally, or whose writings I've had the privilege of studying.

Macrobiotics is a way of eating and living that supports a long and healthy and full life.

The one good thing about life's problems, or difficulties, is that they can lead us to find the truth. They can lead us to freedom from our afflictions if we do not mask or bury them. We can learn valuable, liberating lessons if we strive to do so. We can get to the core of the problem rather than following the common preoccupation with attempting to rid ourselves of the symptoms by any means possible. I've had my share of physical, emotional, and mental suffering in this life, as you will read. I know the sense of helplessness, fear, and distress that can overwhelm a person. I know I'm not alone in this. It is my great desire to make available these teachings to people with concerns such as these.

As well, I wish to make these timeless teachings available to anyone, suffering or not, as they are a powerful aid in navigating our life's path, and understanding life's mysteries. They can be of great benefit toward the goal of a worthwhile, long, and prosperous life. Really, nature, our body's, and our mind's, have much to teach us. And if we observe and follow a few basic principles, we can learn from our experiences, both good and bad. Macrobiotics is not a narrow philosophy or practice. It is a way of living based on traditional, harmonious wisdom from all lands and its peoples who lived in close keeping with nature - their environment.

One basic principle of macrobiotics is non-credo - do not blindly believe. One of my teacher's, Steven Acuff, says we should rely on our own experiences to validate an idea. There are two approaches to take - the intellectual, analytical, which deals with ideas. The other is the practical approach, which is our experience in body and mind after applying the first approach. I encourage you to test the knowledge presented here if you are inclined to - otherwise it's merely an interesting read.

I hope you, dear reader, find enjoyment, inspiration, and helpful advice in the following pages.
